a. Currently there’s a major debate about transgenders and their right to serve in the military. Many transgender individuals bring with them well documented mental and emotional issues that require a serious commitment of time, money, extended therapies, and trainings. Coupled with a very public and open battle with suicide are all reasons why transgender individuals should not be allowed to enlist in the military at this time. b. What is transgender? The accepted and recognized definition of a transgender individual according to Webster’s dictionary is: denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex. Gender fluidity and gender dysphoria are also common terms and†¦show more content†¦e. The ability for a military member to perform in a critical situation is real. Whether in a combat zone or maintaining order in a maritime capacity a solider or sailor will be required to carry out lawful orders and must have the ability to operate in the most stressful of environments while having a clear head. According to Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry said that transgenderism is a â€Å"mental disorder† that merits treatment. Dr. McHughs states that prolonged stress and anxiety can cause inflammation in the brain and an inability to think or act clearly in critical situations. f. The transgender community experiences an unusually high suicide attempt rate of 90% and a suicide rate of 40%. These numbers along with Dr. McHughs â€Å"mental disorder† diagnosis show a small glimpse of the ongoing stressors and emotional distress that transgenders deal with. The extremely high rate is concerning and can’t be overlooked.
